Celebrating Mother's Day

Celebrating Mother's Day

April 16, 2012

"My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her."
-George Washington

There is no other celebration that can honour and glorify a mother's worth than this day. Let us celebrate Mother's Day. Show your love and appreciation to that one person who, despite of the many trials and obstacles in life, continue to guide you and be there for you.

Nearly 150 years ago, an Appalachian homemaker named Anna Jarvis arranged a special day to inform the public about the unfortunate health conditions in her community. She believed that this campaign can be best supported by mothers, hence the term "Mother's Work Day." On her death, Anna's daughter honoured her mother's exemplary work and in return, she requested the United States Federal government to come up with a special day to honour mothers.

After five years from the time Anna's daughter filed the petition, the US Congress adopted a resolution that beckoned all government officials to wear white Carnations in Mother's Day. Carnations are classified as Dianthus caryophyllu, which literally means "flower of love."

Initially, Mother's Day was observed in churches, where people would write letters and send cards and gifts to their mothers. From then on, Mother's day is celebrated annually (not a holiday) not just in the United States but in other parts of the world including Australia. In Australia, Mother's Day celebration is the same as that of the US, which is the 2nd Sunday of May every year.
